Live Training FireOn June 21st starting at 7am Jerome Township Fire Department along with Concord Township FD, Marysville FD, Pleasant Valley FD, Washington Township FD, Union County Sheriff’s Office PSO officers and the Union County EMA conducted a live training fire. During this event crews worked on skills in fire behavior, fire location and extinguishment, hose maneuvers, nozzle technique and water application, reading smoke, R.I.T operations, structural building collapse, Incident command operations, radio communications and scene safety. Prior to this event crews trained inside the residence for two months in areas of search and rescue, self-rescue, ladder operations, building construction, working with hand tools, removing ceilings, forcible entry, hose maneuvers, working with power tools and pump operations. We would like to thank the Property owners for donating the residence for us to use for training. This provided an invaluable resource to us that has allowed many hours of education in hands on fire training. We have attached photos of this event below. If you have any questions about this event or would like to discuss donating a structure or building to the fire department for training please contact Fire Chief Doug Stewart (614) 873-8990, dstewart@jerometownship.com.

Prior to the Burn

Windows, roof and doors were removed for safety. The house was labeled so that crews could identify which area of the house we would be working in.

Furniture, carpet, some wall finishes, appliances, doors, light fixtures and ceiling fans were removed for safety. Crews used the interior of the residence for several months prior to the burn for training. Hands on training is an invaluable tool for firefighters to use skills we may not need on a everyday basis.

Safety measures were used during this training you will notice in the pictures exits were marked through out the structure. This allows us to know a quick way out in case an emergency situation were to happen. You will also see wood pallets, straw and hay used in the structure. This was done to simulate fire loads (furniture, house hold items and finishes) there were also areas were burn boxes were made. These were the areas the fires were to be lit for crews to find and extinguish.

During the Burn

During our burn crews took turns locating the fire with in the structure. Working with different hose movements. Once there they observed fire behavior with in that area and worked on water application techniques.

We utilized several rooms within the structure for our burn starting with the 2nd floor and moving strategically from room to room once a room was no longer safe to work in. This allowed us to use most of the structure for training as well as insuring crews had several revolutions each.
